Saintem bestaat uit een wijngaard van 9 hectare, 100% 35 jaar oude Merlot in Saint Etienne de Lisse. 14,5%vol. De oogst vond plaats tussen 1 en 4 oktober 2020. Diep robijnrood tooit het glas. Gul fruit vult de mond met schitterend rood fruit en zuivere energie doorspekt met herinneringen aan bosbessen met kruidige toetsen. Het palet is zacht, naadloos, rijp en fris. Saintem 2019 is iets frisser nog dan anders misschien (dit is eigen aan 2019 zo blijkt), al prima versmolten en heerlijk intens. Hij komt iets meer "argileux" over vinden ze zelf op l'Eglise Clinet. Het floraal parfum schittert op uiterst verleidelijke wijze. Er is waarschijnlijk niet meer plezier te vinden tegen zo'n prijsje in Bordeaux (en erbuiten). Elevage in 30% nieuwe eik. Schitterende notities in de pers tot 94/100... De boodschap is duidelijk: Mooi, spotgoedkoop en een duidelijke no-brainer! U mag dit met karrevrachten opslaan. Dit verdient het uw huiswijn te worden. IN DE PERS 91 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Februari 2022) The 2019 Saintayme has calmed down nicely since I tasted the barrel sample, still outgoing in some ways yet displaying fine delineation and a tad more terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins on the entry, quite sapid for this cuvée, and lightly spiced, leading to a structured finish. Don’t hesitate to leave this in bottle for a couple of years. Drink 2024-2036. 90-92 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Juni 2020) The 2019 Saintayme, Denis Durantou's Saint-Émilion pure Merlot vineyard, was picked between 1 and 4 October and matures in 30% new oak. It is the most outgoing of the late winemaker's sextet of wines, kirsch and crushed strawberry scents bursting from the glass with a touch of cola. The palate is fleshy and ripe with impressive weight. Good density develops towards the back end with a saline tang on the aftertaste. Give it two or three years in bottle. Drink 2024 - 2036. 93 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Februari 2022) The 2019 Saintayme is just as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. Rich, deep and explosive, the 2019 offers up an exciting mélange of dark cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice and dark spice. I would cellar the 2019 for at least a few years. This is an especially serious edition of the Saintayme. All the elements are impeccably balanced. Tasted two times. Drink 2024-2034. 92-94 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Juni 2020) The 2019 Saintayme offers up a veritable explosion of sweet red cherry, kirsch and floral notes. Deep and lush, with tremendous freshness, Saintayme is terrific in 2019. In fact, this is one of the better recent vintages I can remember tasting. The purity of fruit and overall energy are both remarkable, while the harder edges and slightly savory qualities that can be present are barely perceptible. The 2019 is 100% Merlot picked between October 1 and 4. Denis Durantou's 2019s are absolutely brilliant across the board. My tasting was obviously bittersweet, as Durantou lost his battle with illness just a few weeks prior. Denis Durantou was one of the most intriguing characters in Bordeaux. I can't say I knew him well, but I always enjoyed tasting with him, as he was a person that spoke more with his eyes than with words. Things were implied rather than overtly stated. So, I tasted the 2019s with daughters Constance and Noémie over Zoom, in typical 2020 fashion. The Durantou sisters describe 2019 as a year with an early flowering and homogenous ripening that led to small, concentrated berries and higher pHs than normal. Temperatures were kept cool in the cellar, where both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations took place over cuvaison of 21 days (for all wines), in a reductive enviroment with little oxygen. From top to bottom, the Durantou 2019s are positively stellar. Don't miss them! 90+ Wililam Kelley - robertparker.com (April 2022) Produced by the Durantou family, the 2019 Saintayme is a Saint-Émilion derived from soils rich in large stones in Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse. Offering up aromas of sweet raspberries, raw cocoa, spices and rose petals, it's medium to full-bodied, bright and lively, with a fleshy core of fruit and fine, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish. This will reward a bit of bottle age. It's 100% Merlot, all planted on vigor-reducing riparia rootstocks. Drink 2023-2043. 89-91 Lisa Perrotti-Brown – robertparker.com (Juni 2020) Produced by Denis Darantou and family of Château L’Eglise-Clinet, made from 100% Merlot, the 2019 Saintayme has a deep garnet-purple color. It explodes from the glass with bombastic notes of stewed plums, baked black cherries and fruitcake with hints of mocha, unsmoked cigars and fragrant soil plus a waft of Chinese five spice. Medium to full-bodied, rich and decadent in the mouth, it has a solid foundation of chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing spicy. 94 Jane Anson – decanter.com (Juni 2020) Black chocolate, baked earth, liquorice root and silky smooth tannins greet you on the first attack of this wine. I've never found this the easiest to love of the Durantou range but it is strikingly successful in 2019. Silky and yet slatey in texture, this both eases you through the palate and pulls you up short, slowing things down. Sparks of fresh minerality accompany the pulsing blueberry and raspberry fruits, and the juicy finish makes this one to look out for. Drinking Window 2027 – 2042. 16/20 James Lawther MW – jancisrobinson.com (Juni 2020) 100% Merlot; 30% new oak. St-Émilion brand from the Denis Durantou stable. Same vineyard has supplied the grapes since 2003. Barrel sample. Accent on the fruit with pure, dark- and red-berry aromas and flavour. Chalky tannins behind. Firm, dry finish. A little dusty but the fruit stays. 14.5%. Drink 2024 – 2030. 93-94 James Suckling – jamessuckling.com (Juni 2020) A red with lovely, juicy character and plenty of ripe fruit and chocolate undertones. It’s rich and layered. Flavorful. More concentration than the 2018. 90-92 Jeff Leve – winecellarinsider.com (Juni 2020) DurantouDenis Durantou was een geniale wijnmaker en één van de allergrootste in Bordeaux. De kleine productie van zijn Pomerol "extraordinaire" Eglise Clinet is wereldwijd gegeerd.Zijn talent bewees hij bovendien in de betaalbare wijnen die hij daarnaast maakte: van de achterdeur van l’Eglise Clinet zag Denis zijn wijngaarden van Les Cruzelles en La Chenade (Lalande de Pomerol). Verderop vinden we Saintayme (Saint Emilion) en Montlandrie (Castillon). Ze zijn allemaal heerlijk, geloofwaardig en overtuigend. Saintayme is een perceel van 35 jaar oude Merlots op klei en graves in Saint Etienne de Lisse binnen de appellatie Saint Emilion. In Lalande de Pomerol worden Les Cruzelles en La Chenade gemaakt naargelang de bodemsamenstelling en de ouderdom van de wijnstokken. De jonge wijnstokken van La Chenade (gelegen op graves) verleiden terwijl we de oudere wijnstokken van Les Cruzelles op klei en graves bodems kunnen vergelijken we goede Pomerols. Sinds de aankoop in 2000 zette Denis de wijngaard maniacaal naar zijn hand. Montlandrie in Castillon is de recentste aankoop: de 11 hectare klei en kalkgronden zijn beplant met 25 jaar oude wijnstokken (70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc of 70%, 25% en 5% Cabernet Sauvignon vanaf 2016). Buiten de erkende appellaties om, behoren deze wijnen tot de beste van Bordeaux. De tweede wijn van Eglise Clinet, La Petite Eglise, is zeldzaam met een jaarlijks productie beperkt tot zo'n 7.000 flesjes. Het levenswerk van Denis Durantou wordt verdergezet door zijn drie dochters. « Je veux continuer à faire honneur au travail de mon père », zegt Noémie die al 4 jaar vinifieert samen met Olivier Gautrat, al 20 jaar maître de chai. « À Pomerol, Je suis chez moi. J’y ai grandi, j’allais à l’école du village, je jouais dans le chai et j’ai le souvenir des odeurs… ». Constance zorgt voor 400 olijfbomen en truffeleiken. Alix volgt vanuit Parijs en is gepassioneerd door kunst en Japanse cultuur. Hun mama, kunstenares Marie Reilhac neemt deel aan de assemblages. Zeventig jaar oude Cabernet Franc wijnstokken gedijen op het perfect gedraineerd terroir van argilo-graveleux. Eglise Clinet is één van de grootste wijnen die er zijn. Hun Les Cruzelles in Lalande-de-Pomerol en Montlandrie in Castillon zijn superwijnen en blijven héél toegankelijk. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
