2022 Haut Bailly II is verbluffend mooi. Zoveel charme en joviale présence konden wij nog maar zelden ontwaren in deze wijn. Hij was vroeger welgekend onder de naam La Parde de Haut Bailly. U mag dit met karrenvrachten ophalen: schitterende wijn. 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. IN DE PERS 90-92 Yohan Castaign – The Wine Advocate Issue 266 - robertparker.com (April 2023) A blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2022 Haut-Bailly II reveals aromas of licorice, dark berries, plum, spices and cherries, followed by a medium to full-bodied palate that's round, succulent and concentrated, concluding with a penetratingly saline finish. It’s a fleshy yet long Haut-Bailly II, matured in only 30% new oak. The erstwhile Château Le Pape is now partly integrated in this cuvée. 90-92 Neal Martin – vinous.com (Mei 2023) The 2022 Haut-Bailly II is a selection of fruit from younger vines (there is also a Troisieme Vin). Dark berry fruit, brown spice and tobacco aromas unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine acidity and moderate depth. There is a cracked black pepper dash toward a finish that is reserved at the moment and will open once in bottle. It has real personality and should aged over 15 or more years. 91-93 Antonio Galloni – vinous.com (Mei 2023) The 2022 Haut-Bailly II is bright, fresh and vibrant, almost surprisingly so for such a torrid vintage. Medium in body and gracious, the 2022 is all class. Like so many wines in this vintage, Haut-Bailly II offers a compelling mix of ripe, radiant fruit supported by a super-classic structural feel. Pretty floral notes brighten up the finish. This is beautifully done. 92 Jane Anson – janeanson.com (Mei 2023) Silky, smooth, some raspberry leaf freshness, this is creamy, but not overly done, has intensity and depth, edges of white pepper spice and pulses of bright slate minerality. No more Château le Pape as of this vintage (after 10 years of working the 6ha vineyard to bring it up to the quality they are looking for), as from now on it has been integrated into Haut-Bailly II. 30hl/h yields, 2nd vintage in the new cellar. Gentle, low intervention winemaking. 92-94 Jeb Dunnuck – jebdunnuck.com (Mei 2023) The 2022 Haut-Bailly II is based on 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Harvest here spanned from May 7 to 27, and this is the first vintage where the Le Pape cuvée is no longer being produced, hence those grapes are now included in the second wine of Haut-Bailly. This beauty offers a great nose of ripe black fruits, smoked herbs, tobacco, and black olives that carries to a medium to full-bodied, round, elegant 2022 with beautiful tannins. It's unquestionably a terrific second wine that will provide two decades of prime drinking. 91-93 Jeff Leve – thewinecellarinsider.com (Mei 2023) Cigar wrapper, mint leaf, spice, smoke, cherries, plums and cocoa pop effortlessly in the nose. On the palate, the wine is fresh, silky, and creamy with energy to the spicy red fruits. This is a very classy second wine with complexity, and character. This is perfect to enjoy while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop. The wine blends 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Malbec. This is the first vintage incorporating the vines from Chateau Le Pape. Zijn wijnen markeren de proever volgens “l’esthétique à la française” die door dichter André Gide beschreven wordt als “rien de trop”. Omwille van dit classicisme herinnert Haut Bailly meer aan Haut Brion of La Mission dan aan Pape Clément of Smith Haut Lafitte. De wijngaard is een homogeen geheel van 30 hectare te Léognan, tien kilometer ten Zuiden van Bordeaux. Hij is beplant met 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot en 6% Cabernet Franc. Jaarlijks worden er zo’n 160.000 flessen geproduceerd. Voorgaande eigenaars waren Firmin le Bailly, Laurent de Lafaurie, baron de Monbadon, Alcide Bellot des Minières en Jean Sanders. Haut Bailly was Belgisch tussen 1955 en 1998. Sindsdien behoort het toe aan Robert G. Wilmers die de M&T Bank dirigeert in Buffalo, New York. Zijn echtgenote Elisabeth is een française. In de recentere wijnjaren 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 en 2010, herkennen we de gebruikelijke elegantie, finesse en aromatische complexiteit maar het gebalder en intenser karakter is nieuw. We danken deze “tour de force” aan een meer beheerst rendement en het plukken op optimale rijpheid. Reeds sinds 1967 is er een tweede wijn, la Parde de Haut Bailly, en sinds 1987 zelfs een derde, een generieke Pessac Léognan. Die strengere selectie maakt van La Parde een even elegante en complexe wijn als de Haut Bailly van twintig jaar terug. SandersRobert G. Wilmers bracht de kwaliteitswijnen van Haut Bailly op een hoger echelon.
