Al bijna een eeuw is Lynch Bages in handen van de familie Cazes. De 2014 is een ambitieuze wijn. 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc en 2% Petit Verdot. 13,4%vol. 3/4 van de productie geniet een élevage in nieuwe eik. Dieppurper gekleurd. Grootse neus met intens zwart fruit. Het Cabernet karakter (cassis en potlood) is manifest in de mond. Rokerige accenten van ceder (het sigaarkistje) en zwarte bessen animeren de gelaagde smaakervaring. De mooie frisheid danken we aan de fijne zuren. De materie is precies omlijnd in een klassieke, symmetrische stijl en wordt opgevolgd door een mooie finale met lengte. De Lynch Bages van 2014 denkt méér in termen van kracht dan verleiding: het is een geconcentreerde en prominente bewaarwijn. Een primeuraankoop van Lynch Bages is haast noodzakelijk, want oudere jaren vind je moeilijk.

The 2014 Lynch Bages was actually similar to the 2014 Pichon Baron on the nose: tight and surly at first, demanding a lot of coaxing from the glass. It eventually opens up with a mixture of red and black fruit, cedar and tobacco, gaining more harmony and intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite linear and focused at the moment, precise if just needing a little more body and depth to evolve on the straight-laced finish. Give this Pauillac 4-5 years in bottle and it is likely to repay you. Drink: 2019-2038.

The Château Lynch Bages 2014 is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot matured in 75% new oak. Yields were a respectable 40 hectoliters per hectare, although that figure is less than Jean-Charles Cazes predicted earlier in the season. The nose is well defined with veins of graphite infusing the black fruit: quite strict for Lynch Bages, a little reserved at this early stage. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannin, racy acidity although the pH is around 3.7, linear and a little austere on the finish. This is tightly coiled at the moment, gritty in the mouth but I like the Pauillac typicité here – not a million miles away from Grand Puy Lacoste in style. This deserves respect and I suspect it will age with the style of Jean-Charles's father, who turned 80 on the day of my visit. Drink: 2018-2040.

This has fascinating aromas already with blackcurrants and cassis. Hints of spices. It's full-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and a long, focused finish. Muscular but toned and beautiful.

Blackish crimson. Sweet and luscious and almost with black-cherry super-ripe aromas! A note of something charred here. Pretty interesting. Lots of work to overpower the tannins. Should make very good old bones to chew over. Long and glamorous. Tasting it blind, I guessed it was Lynch. Drink 2024-2040.

The 2014 Lynch-Bages is just as powerful and dense from bottle as it was from barrel. Deep, powerful and bold, it possesses remarkable richness in all of its dimensions. Ripe red cherry, spice, leather, tobacco and rose petal all develop in the glass, but it is the wine's sheer amplitude today that is quite remarkable. It will need quite a bit of cellaring to be at its best, and is clearly built to age. This is a terrific showing from the Cazes family. The blend is 69 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 26 % Merlot, 3 % Cabernet Franc and 2 % Petit Verdot. Drink 2024-2044.

Dit illuster Château bevindt zich ten Westen dan de Route du Vin (D2), onder het saai stadje Pauillac, op het toepasselijk genaamd “Plateau de Bages”. De wijngaard ligt halverwege tussen Lafite en Mouton in het Noorden, en tussen Latour en de twee Pichons in het Zuiden. Lynch Bages is een oud domein, waarvan de geschiedenis teruggaat tot de XVIde Eeuw. Het Château draagt de naam van Thomas Lynch en zijn Ierse familie die het Château bezat in de XVIIde XVIIIde Eeuw. In 1855 werd Lynch Bages gecatalogeerd als Cinquième Grand Cru Classé, terwijl het vandaag eerder aanzien worden als Deuxième of Troisième Grand Cru Classé.
In 1939 kwam deze wijngaard van 100ha in de handen van Jean-Charles Cazes, de overgrootvader van de gelijknamige, actuele directeur. De familie is tot vandaag ook eigenaar van Les Ormes de Pez in Saint Estèphe. Jean-Michel Cazes deed het gehucht van Bages herleven met Café Lavinal en le Comptoir d'Andréa die de namen van zijn twee grootmoeders dragen. Deze hyper moderne “productie-faciliteit” is van de hand van Didi Pei wiens vader de pyramide du Louvre bouwde. Glas en beton imponeren en zijn "le prolongement du geste technique, où la fonctionnalité et l’aisance au travail priment".
Als essentiële Pauillac levert Lynch Bages zeer consistente kwaliteit over de wijnjaren heen en een typische expressie van Cabernet Sauvignon met zwart fruit, potlood en leder. Grote successen werden geboekt in 1952, 1953, 1955, 1957, 1959, 1961, 1962 en 1966. Sinds de jaren tachtig floreerde Lynch Bages opnieuw met 1989, 1990, 2000, 2009 en 2010 bijvoorbeeld. Sindsdien bevestigt Jean-Charles: The best is yet to come...
CazesJean-Michel Cazes is een bijzonder aimabel man die gestudeerd heeft in de Verenigde Staten en een carrière wist uit te bouwen bij IBM, voor hij naar de Médoc terugkeerde. Deze wereldburger zoekt open, heerlijke, moderne wijnen, vertolkt de klasse en het karakter van Pauillac en is als voorzitter van de Commanderie du Bontemps de beste ambassadeur van de hedendaagse Médoc. Lynch Bages is op vandaag één van de meest herkende en erkende Médocwijnen wereldwijd en een essentiële Pauillac door het toedoen van Jean Michel Cazes.
